HGV licenses used to be fairly easy to obtain, but nowadays the rules are much stricter and the prices have gone up extremely high for any type of driver training. There are now even additional requirements for those who have been driving for years. The newest requirement is the Certificate of Professional Competence, or CPC.

For truck drivers this is bad news, as HGV training prices are sky high and a newbie just starting out struggles to afford the expensive training. New drivers are often forced to work during the day at a regular job in a different sector, and then take evening classes to complete their training and hopefully pass the exam which is necessary in order to get the HGV license.

It is important to make sure that you receive quality lessons and that you understand all the new requirements. In order to do this, you must find a reputable company or online course to get started with. This will help you to be better prepared for the theory exam and eventually the practical exam. If you do not properly understand the material covered in the course, then you will not pass the exam and you will have to redo the hours.

Natural many HGV drivers are not very keen to do this training. They already think they know everything after driving for 10, 20, or even 30 years. But the face is that the rule change, especially over a period of 20 or 30 years. For this reason there is now also CPC training. But as a new driver you will not need to worry about this for another five years at least, because the road rules should still be fresh in your mind for a couple of years once you pass your initial driving exam.

Don’t let the high driver training prices scare you off. HGV driving is actually a very lucrative profession and once you get past the hassles of training and exams, you will have a great career mapped out for you.
